CARRIS considers Quality and Environment as a path to continuous improvement of the organization and operation of the Company and as a contribution to social welfare. This contribution means the satisfaction of customers' requirements and the statutory and regulatory standards, using the available resources properly.

Therefore, it was implemented an Integrated Management System for Quality and Environment, in the area of urban public transport of passengers, which is governed by the general principles defined in Quality and Environmental Policy.

  Environmental Management 

CARRIS has been developing, over the last few years, a thorough activity in environmental terms, that seeks not only the compliance with all legal requirements, but also to control and reduce all aspects of their business that may interact negatively with the environment.

Based on this aim, CARRIS implemented and Environmental Management System that, on April 2008, was certified by APCER - Portuguese Association of Certification, which is integrated with the Quality Management System, certified on January 2006.

What are the advantages of EMS certification for Carris?

· Ensure compliance with environmental legislation and other requirements of the organization, thus protecting the environment and reducing pollution;

· Improve environmental performance by optimizing natural resources consumption and reducing waste disposal in landfills;

· Prevent environmental accidents;

· Improve Carris image;

· Increase Stakeholders confidence.

Examples of Carris practices in this field?

· Optimization of energy and water consumption on the premises, through a systematic monitoring of their consumption;

. Available containers suitable for waste collection identified with labels, defining good separation practices, in administrative areas and workshops;

· Installation of equipment for treatment of liquid (oil and grease) in premises to improve the quality of discharged effluents, thoroughly complying with the law;

· Non-use of refrigerants that promote the destruction of the ozone layer on air-conditioning systems in public service fleet;

· Seal fuel supply areas;

· Preparing intervention and action sheets for use in emergency or occasional situations;

· Inclusion of environmental considerations and criteria in Cadernos de Encargos;

· Awarded on the 1st international workshop Buying Green.

  Quality Management 

Carris obtained in January 2006 (renewed in January 2009), the Quality Management System certification, granted by APCER - Portuguese Association of Certification, according to NP EN ISO 9001:2000, demonstrating the internal organization of the company and its application on their relation with customers.

How is monitoring and measuring of processes done?

It is done based on Performance Indicators (KPI's), such as Customer Satisfaction Index, Occupancy Rate, Accidents Rate, Customer Complaints Rate, Average Answer Time, Vehicles Failure Rate, Absentee Rate and Formation Rate.

  Lines Certification 

CARRIS also engaged in the certification of its lines and is currently the only operator of public passenger transport that has certified bus and tram lines, currently 40 (12 more in progress), based on NP EN 13816:2003 and ET.STP 01-1:2005; ET.STP 01-2:2005 and ET.STP 02:2005 of the certification authority CERTIF - Association for Products Certification.

1. Performance measurement through the conduct of audits and mystery-customer visits, as well as regular reviews of the results achieved by the service provider.
